# Song rating via sticker database

mpd has a support for maintaining extra meta tags for songs in a separate database called the sticker database, see [User’s Manual — Music Player Daemon 0.22.4 documentation](https://www.musicpd.org/doc/html/user.html#the-sticker-database)

Would be great if you could add this nice feature in MAFA too.

Favorites in MAFA can be regarded as items having the highest rating (5/5 in the common terms of ratings).

Stickers in MPD are currently limited only to songs (tracks) in the MPD db. Extra metadata can’t be attached to Albums or Artists.

That’s why the favourites feature in MAFA is implemented locally in the client, and not using stickers.

There is also no MPD approved standard for sticker semantics that different clients can share, so each client has its own stickers defined with different meanings.

Can you please describe a bit more what would you like the proposed song rating feature to be like, and how would it differ from the current Favorites feature?

Hi Alex,

some Info’s about stickers database:  
[https://mpd.readthedocs.io/en/stable/user.html#the-sticker-database](https://mpd.readthedocs.io/en/stable/user.html#the-sticker-database)

Add this line to “/etc/mpd.conf”:  
**sticker\_file "/mpd.stickers"**

The **mpd.stickers** file is a normal SQLite3 file with only one Table called “sticker”:

**Value** of 10=5 Stars, 9=4,5 Stars, 8=4 Stars,…

I don’t know if mpd protocol will give “mpd.stickers” infos directly or if you have to make a SQL command to get the ratings. But MPDroid is OpenSource ([GitHub - abarisain/dmix: A modern MPD Client for Android.](https://github.com/abarisain/dmix)) and you can refer how they have implemented the Ratings.

Hi, thank. I’m aware of the sticker db and protocol. It’s just very limited and requires relatively a lot of work on the client side to implement for albums and other tags except for individual songs.  
There are [open issues for MPD](https://github.com/MusicPlayerDaemon/MPD/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+%22sticker+database%22) to improve sticker support.  
For know this feature request is in the [to-do list](https://mafa.indi.software/todo/) but with low priority.
